Metrocentre Goes Wild with Climate Action North

Metrocentre, the North East’s popular shopping and entertainment destination, has teamed up with social enterprise Climate Action North to advance its green initiatives.

Together, they will work on rewilding outdoor areas and increasing biodiversity across the centre's grounds. This includes creating wildflower meadows, enhancing scrubland, and planting native plants and trees for biodiversity as part of Climate Action North’s Pollinator Parks ® initiative. The goal is to allow nature to flourish naturally and provide safe spaces for local wildlife to thrive.

The first step will be to survey the area and find the best places to install bird boxes for local birds to nest.

This partnership also gives the local community a chance to get involved. Schools and local people can join citizen science activities and take part in Climate Action North’s Global Wilders ® awards programme where they can help with planting, spotting wildlife, and other tasks connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These hands-on activities will teach everyone about protecting nature and how they can make a wider global difference, acting locally for planet and people.

Additionally, training sessions and events will take place in Metrocentre’s Community Hub to provide more chances for the public to learn about nature, rewilding, and the importance of biodiversity.

Climate Action North’s CEO, Sharon Lashley, said: “We are thrilled to work with Metrocentre. Their commitment to making the world a better place fits perfectly with our mission. This partnership will allow us to deliver real action on the ground as well as providing quality opportunities for schools and shoppers to take part in activities.”

Gavin Prior, Metrocentre Centre Director added: “We’re proud to work with Climate Action North to make a positive impact on our environment. This project supports our ongoing sustainability efforts and gives our community a chance to engage with nature.”

By partnering with Climate Action North, Metrocentre is helping create a more sustainable future and leading by example.

Climate Action North’s portfolio of work is primarily funded by corporate sponsorships from the business community, which is then reinvested into climate action initiatives across the North of England.

These include creating Pollinator Parks®, teaching communities through Global Wilders®, cleaning rivers with North East Action for Rivers, organising litter picks and beach cleans, and building Climate Resilient Communities.
